URGENT CALL TO ACTION!
STIMULUS PACKAGE DISABILITY-RELATED PROVISIONS IN JEOPARDY
The Senate is currently debating the Economic Stimulus Package (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009). The bill currently includes several provisions that will enable and empower people with disabilities to enjoy full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency. The provisions include:
Jobs--$500 million for vocational rehabilitation (VR) programs
Education: $13 billion for State grants and $500 million for early intervention
Independent living: $200 million for independent living centers
Social Security: $17 billion total for a one-time payment $300 to all SSI and SSDI recipients, veterans and others
Medicaid: $87 billion for an increase for the federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP)
Many forces, including moderate Democrats and Republicans, are working to reduce the size of the bill, including cutting or eliminating some or all of these investments targeted for enhancing opportunities for persons with disabilities.
